PTFE rod, also known as Teflon rod, is used for many applications. For instance, think about the chemical, food and offshore industries. This is due to the unique characteristics of PTFE rod, such as:
- Chemically inert in almost all conditions
- Very low friction characteristics
- Almost nothing sticks to the PTFE rod — just like a Teflon pan
- Is heat resistant up to 260 °C
Our PTFE rods have a consistent diameter, are straight and in general 1000 mm in length. The following sizes of 100% pure PTFE are in stock and can be supplied by us within 24 hours:

Where are PTFE rods used?
What are PTFE round rods?
A PTFE rod is a solid component of 100% pure PTFE. We hold a range of diameters, from 10 mm to 100 mm. Our standard rods are all 1000 mm in length.
Where are round PTFE rods used?
PTFE rods are used mostly to manufacture machine parts and all kinds of chemical, electrical and mechanical components, where the excellent performance characteristics of PTFE are required. Many fillers are available to adapt the characteristics of PTFE to the application requirements, such as carbon, bronze and glass. You can read more about this below.
If your diameter is not shown, please contact Jeroen, our product specialist, to discuss any options.
What length can be supplied?
To keep costs as low as possible we have opted for offering our stock of PTFE rod in length of 1000 mm. Of course, we would also be able to offer longer length and the thinner diameters can even be supplied in rolls. In sufficient quantities we can also cut rods to size, so that you can process them without delay.
Pros and cons of PTFE rods
Some of the advantages:
- PTFE shows excellent high and low temperature resistance (-200+260°C, for a short period up to 300°C)
- Extremely non-stick. Virtually nothing sticks to a PTFE rod
- Easy to process
- Very low friction coefficient
- Chemically resistant to almost anything
- High electrical insulator
- UV resistant
- Suitable for contact with foodstuffs
Some of the disadvantages:
- Limited strength
- Difficult to bond or weld
- Relatively expensive
Processing of PTFE rod
It is most common to machine the PTFE rods. The chosen technique is, of course, dependent on the intended end product. The most used techniques are drilling, cutting, turning, milling or filing. This can be done by hand, mechanically or fully automatic with CNC mechanically guided machines.
They are relatively soft and easy to process. The most difficult aspect is to clamp the rod firmly to the lathe, without deforming the material, due to the very low friction coefficient of the material. Sharp tools and low speeds are highly recommended. Water or laser cutting techniques can also be used if the machinery is available.
Characteristics of PTFE rod / Technical data
Bonding a PTFE rod
PTFE rod is non-stick, which means that nothing will adhere to it. Even the strongest glues have very little grip on the material. The only way to bond round PTFE rod would be to etch it chemically first. This alters the molecular surface and enables bonding.
Grounded PTFE Rod
Should you be looking for a specific, very exact diameter, we can provide through our network the option for the rod to be ground first before we dispatch it to you. That way, you can have the exact diameter you are looking for. If you are interested, please contact Jeroen, our PTFE rod specialist, to discuss these options.
Use of PTFE rods in combination with food production
All our rods are FDA certified and can therefore be used in contact with food products.
To which chemicals are PTFE rods resistant?
PTFE is resistant to nearly all chemicals. You can view the Chemical resistance table via this link, to check if this applies to your circumstances.
What is the difference between your PTFE rod and Teflon PTFE rod
Both are equal in terms of components and made from Carbon and Fluoride, or so-called polytetrafluoroethylene. Teflon = PTFE. Therefore, a Teflon rod is equal to a PTFE rod. The only difference is that Teflon is a brand name for PTFE from Chemours. In the same way that Luxaflex is a brand name for horizontal blinds, they are both the same product.
